From the Office of the Athletic Director

From the Office of Athletic Director David Osborn:

The Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) made an announcement on Wednesday, May 27, regarding the return-to-practice protocols.

The Smackover-Norphlet School District coaches began the process of setting up the appropriate areas for this return-to-practice today, May 28.

With the restrictions that are in place, there will be some major changes to how a work-out or practice will look at this time, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).  The athletic department is in the process of purchasing the required PPE which will be needed to safely follow these regulations.

As soon as all required PPE has been received and all new protocols are in place, an announcement will be made on The Buckaroo Blog and the district website regarding practices, schedules, parent information, etc.

The athletic department is as anxious as our athletes to resume practice!  For as eager as we are, the safety of our students and staff must come first.

Go, Buckaroos!

SHS Book Return

Smackover High School sent out reminder letters this weeks for students to return their textbooks if they haven’t done so already.

If you received this letter, please return your textbooks to the high school and place them in the designated book drop off box.

If you received this letter in error, or have questions, please call the high school office.

Congratulations, Ms. Camille DeVaney!

For the past eighteen years when a student has walked into Ms. DeVaney’s classroom, he/she felt welcomed.  She began teaching music in Malvern and also spent several years as an adjunct professor/accompanist at a college.

Undoubtedly, walking from a church choir director/organist to a middle school math teacher was an incredible feat.  However, Ms. DeVaney met the challenge and consistently challenged her students and herself to achieve everything possible.  She has worked diligently for the past five years to teach our middle schoolers math at Norphlet Middle School.  Her number one goal has been to make a difference in her students’ lives.  She has successfully completed that.

It’s always bittersweet to see colleagues leave; however, Ms. DeVaney, we wish you well, and can’t wait to hear about your travels and good times with your sister and family.  Keep playing those hymns and making the world a better place.

Thank you for your dedication to our school and district.   Know that you have touched many. You will be missed.

Congratulations, Mr. Ricky Green!

Who at the age of 45 decides to become a teacher?  Our one and only Mr. Green.  Right out of High School, he decided to major in music.  Don’t tell his students, but he didn’t last too long.  Music might be fun, but studying….let’s just say, “Not so much!”  He’s worn many hats in his lifetime, and retirement is just another chapter.

He’s sold medical equipment, been a youth director, has been a Special Ed instructor, and leads music in his church.  Yet, he knew he had another purpose….Teaching!  He pursued his license in teaching and walked into his first classroom in Fordyce.  He has taught eighteen years since then, and Smackover Norphlet has been his focus for sixteen of those years.

He has taught Social Studies/History/ and Geography.  His greatest pleasures have been connecting with his students. He has an uncanny way of bringing History to life, and that has been his joy in the classroom. His best moments have been when his students have connected history to real life situations. His sense of humor and “off the wall” comments are a treasure.  His students and peers will always remember him as the “Dancing King”.  We just never knew when he’d break out in a dance.

We thank you, Mr. Green, for your love of life and your love for others.  You will be missed.

Keep on dancing!

Congratulations, Mrs. Ree Ross!

Mrs. Ree Ross is currently working with students in a physical activity class at Smackover Elementary School.  After working in the education world for 36 years in the Smackover Norphlet School District, Mrs. Ree will be retiring May 22, 2020.

Mrs. Ree has served in many different capacities throughout her career.  She dedicated many years at the high school where she served as an office aide and substitute.   She then moved to the elementary campus where she served as office assistant and physical activity teacher.

Mrs. Ree Ross loved being around children and watching them grow academically, socially, and physically.  Her consistent love for all children was always observed.  She was an encourager to students, staff, and parents.   Mrs. Ree’s friendly personality and bright smile brightened the room she was in.  Her presence on the elementary campus will truly be missed.  We wish you much happiness as you begin your next chapter of life.  May God bless you in all that you do.
