Month: May 2020

Congratulations, Mrs. Jan Peeples!

Mrs. Peeples is currently a third grade math and science teacher at Smackover Elementary School.  With 37 ½ years total in teaching, 34 years have been dedicated to the Smackover-Norphlet School District.  Mrs. Peeples will be retiring from the Smackover-Norphlet School District effective May 22, 2020.

Mrs. Peeples began her teaching career at the Holy Redeemer School where she taught for one semester.  She then taught PE and first grade in the El Dorado School District for 2 ½ years.  Mrs. Peeples stayed home with her children Heather and Matt, and then fulfilled a promise to her grandmother in getting her elementary certification. When she completed her degree, she began to volunteer at Smackover Elementary School and then was hired as a teacher where the rest is history.

She stated that she loved the maturity of third graders and their willingness to learn.  For 34 years, she has taught in grades 2nd and 3rd at Smackover Elementary.

Having graduated from Smackover High School, she always wanted to give back to a school that gave so much to her.  She also loved teaching math and science and the reward you get as a teacher when you see the light bulb going off in a child’s face when they “get it”.  Mrs. Peeples has stated many times that she has had many wonderful years as an educator.  As a leader and a positive team player, Mrs. Peeples has made a positive impact on many students and parents through the years.  Her presence on the elementary campus will be missed.

Thank you Mrs. Peeples for your many years of dedication and commitment to the education world.  We wish you the best as you begin your next chapter of life.  May God bless you in all that you do!

Clarice Long is currently serving as Smackover Elementary Assistant Principal.  After 44 years’ experience in the education world, with a dedicated 30 years in the Smackover Norphlet School District, Mrs. Long will be retiring May 22, 2020

She has worn many hats while working as an educator.  Mrs. Long began her teaching career at Holy Redeemer as a Principal.  Then later joined the public school system and made a positive impact on many students, teachers, and families.  She has worked as a classroom teacher, interventionist, assistant principal, and cheerleader sponsor.

When Mrs. Long described her time in education, she said,

  • I hope I was able to set a positive example by doing my best in any circumstances or situations.
  • I hope, with my cheer teams, we were able to bring pride to and for our school and our community, not only by being state champions three times and runner up four times, but, by unabashedly being ravid Buckaroo fans.
  • I hope, with my student councils, we were able to emphasize the importance of honoring and respecting our country’s Veterans through our annual Veterans Day program and placing flags on the graves of Veterans at our cemetery.
  • I hope I was able to make a difference in our students’ lives.

Mrs. Long dedicated many years to the athletic program where she lead and supported the Buckaroo cheerleaders.  Mrs. Long had a passion for teaching and meeting the needs of her students.  Many of her students have shared wonderful years of being in her class.  Mrs. Long finished out her education career where she led teachers, students, and parents in the assistant principal role.  Mrs. Long has been an asset to the Smackover Norphlet School District where she impacted many lives as a teacher, friend, and colleague.  She will be missed with her enthusiastic energy.  We wish you much happiness as you begin your next chapter of life.  May God bless you in all that you do!

Congratulations, Mrs. Jan Henderson!

After 43 years in education and 36 years in our community, Smackover High School Principal, Jan Henderson, is setting her sights on a well-deserved retirement.

A true educator strives to make a difference in lives every day, and Mrs. Henderson has done just that.  She has loved, inspired, and challenged students and teachers alike.  As a teacher, most of her former students would say the thing they remember the most is how much she cared for her students.  She was selfless in the classroom and always wanted to make her students feel loved.

As an administrator, her quirky and dynamic personality has contributed to a positive work environment, and her leadership has been invaluable.  Mrs. Henderson has a gift of “cheering” for others, whether it be the Bucks or those people that just need a little encouragement.  She has devoted much of her life to Smackover High School and will be greatly missed.  We wish her the best and brightest in retirement and the next part of her journey!
