Sales Tax Holiday is This Weekend!

Arkansas will hold its annual sales tax holiday, beginning Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 12:01 a.m. and ending Sunday, August 2, 2015 at 11:59 p.m.

State and local sales tax will not be collected during this 48-hour period on the sale of:

  1. Clothing and footwear if the sales price is less than one hundred dollars ($100) per item;
  2. Clothing accessories and equipment if the sales price is less than fifty dollars ($50) per item;
  3. School supplies;
  4. School art supplies; and
  5. School instructional materials.

2015-2016 Parent Student Handbook

At the board meeting on Tuesday night, several policies were updated which could directly affect students.  Any policy which has been updated has been highlighted in yellow on the table of contents.

A few additional changes have been made throughout the handbook.  These changes have also been highlighted in yellow.  Please pay particular attention to the technology section of the handbook as some of this information has been updated.

Tickets on Sale for Hooten’s Classic Game

The Smackover Buckaroos will be playing in the Hooten’s Classic game on August 31, 2015 at UAPB.

Tickets are $7 each and may be purchased at the Smackover-Norphlet School District Central Office.  The cost of admission will allow you entry into the following two games:

  • 5:30 pm – Bearden vs Lafayette County
  • 7:30 pm – Warren vs Smackover

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to see the Smackover Buckaroos in action!

Open House

Open house for all campuses in the Smackover-Norphlet School District will be Thursday, August 13, 2015 from 5:30 pm – 7 pm.

  • Smackover Preschool
  • Smackover Elementary School
  • Norphlet Elementary School
  • Norphlet Middle School
  • Smackover High School

Elementary students are encouraged to bring their school supplies on that evening.

Vaccination Information

  • If your child turned or will turn 11 on or before September 1, 2015 he/she will need a TDaP.
  • If your child is entering 7th grade he/she will be required to have one dose of MCV4 (Meningococcal) vaccine.
  • If your child turned or will turn 16 on or before September 1, 2015, he/she will need MCV4 (Meningococcal) vaccine.
  • Please call your local Health Department to schedule your appointment.  Appointments are filling up fast. You have until October 1, 2015 to be in compliance!
  • Reminder, if you wish to file for an exemption for one or more of the required vaccines a new exemption letter is required each year.

STEM Saturday! – PLTW Gateway

The new school year is almost here and the Smackover-Norphlet School District is pleased to announce that all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students will get to participate in two new semester-long courses from Project Lead the Way’s Gateway Program this year:

Automation and Robotics

Design and Modeling

These courses will be taught be Mr. Luke Forbess and Ms. Robin Boerwinkle at Norphlet Middle School.

In the next two years, we will also start offering other PLTW courses such as Flight and Space, the Science of Technology, The Magic of Electrons, and Computer Science at Norphlet Middle School.

NMS Orientation

Norphlet Middle School will host its 6th through 8th grade orientation meetings on Thursday, August 13, during the Open House hours.  Class schedules will be available for pick up as well.  Students and parents need to meet in the auditorium at the following times:

  • 8th Graders – 5:30 pm
  • 7th Graders – 6:00 pm
  • 6th Graders – 6:30 pm

SHS Registration

Smackover High School students will be allowed to pick up their class schedules on the following dates:

  • Seniors – August 3 from 8 am to 12 pm
  • Juniors – August 4 from 8 am to 12 pm
  • Sophomores – August 5 from 8 am to 12 pm
  • Freshman – August 6 from 8 am to 12 pm
