Writing Turkeys, Part 2

The original post below highlighted the work earlier this month of Smackover Elementary fourth-graders who were inspired by Wendy Silvano’s “Turkey” books. The students enjoyed a nice surprise last week when they received a letter of gratitude from none other than the author herself, Wendy Silvano!

Inspired by Wendy Silvano’s “Turkey” books, Smackover Elementary fourth-grade students wrote their own “Turkey” book. They worked in teams, brainstormed ideas, and wrote their story in Library. Then, they typed and printed their story in Computer Lab. After they printed their story, they illustrated their book in Art. When their book was completed, it was published and they read their story to the class in the Library.

In Memoriam: Coach Mike Poff

Smackover-Norphlet School District is saddened at the loss of Coach Mike Poff, who passed away this past Saturday, May 20, 2023. Coach Poff was a valued member of the Smackover-Norphlet educational family who was cherished by both students and faculty while serving 30 years of a 42-year career total as a teacher and coach in Smackover-Norphlet School District.

While at Smackover, and then later Smackover-Norphlet, he taught Science, served as Athletic Director, and coached multiple sports for both boys and girls including as head coach in Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Golf, and Softball. His teams won multiple championships including two state championships in Golf.

These accomplishments pale in comparison to the thousands of young people whose lives he touched both in the classroom and on the playing field.  Coach Poff will be greatly missed by the Buckaroo Family and his impact on Smackover-Norphlet Schools will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Please join with all of Buckaroo Nation in sending thoughts and prayers to the family of Coach Poff.

Funeral services will be held at the Smackover First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
