SMACKOVER – Norphlet Middle School will have a new campus leader, as the Smackover-Norphlet School District Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to name Mrs. Yolonda Martin as the new NMS Principal during their board meeting last month.
“I am honored and excited to be selected to become a part of the Smackover-Norphlet family,” said Mrs. Martin. “This is a great community where it is obvious that students come first and everyone works together to support one another.”
Mrs. Martin has spent over 30 years as an educator, with 16 of those coming in administration. As a principal in Windham Independent School District in Texas, she led the campus to its first exemplary status by implementing an instructional intervention plan that increased scores across all demographics.
Her staff was recognized for developing innovative strategies and embracing a concept of “thinking outside the box.” The district gained additional funding from corporate connections and partnerships with industries. This creative financial plan provided an avenue to improve instruction, reward achievements and provide campus motivation. Mrs. Martin also was honored to have one of her campus teachers selected as the Texas Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Martin and her husband, Harold, have four children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Martin retired from AEP-SWEPCO after a 44-year career. The Martins enjoy spending time with their family and following the activities of their grandchildren.
