Scholarship Title: Arkansas Public Health Association

Qualifications for eligibility:

  • Awarded to a senior entering a field in public health
  • Maintains a 2.5 GPA or higher

SHS Math Competition Winners

Nearly 100 students from three Union County schools took part in the second annual Martha Deichler Union County Math Contest, which was held on Saturday, February 15, at El Dorado High School

Students competed in six categories:

  • Algebra I
  • Algebra II
  • Geometry
  • PreCalculus/Trigonometry
  • Calculus
  • Statistics

Students were vying for trophies for first, second, and third place.  Trophy winners also received awards in the amounts of $30, $20, and $10.

Congratulations to the following Smackover High School students who placed at the Competition:

  • Geometry – Haley Sampson (3rd place)
  • Calculus – Troy Dino (3rd place)
  • Statistics – Sam Zargari (1st place), Cammie Martin (2nd place), and Tyler Waxley (3rd place)
  • Algebra II – Brycelynn Bailey (1st place)

Sponsor Bill Deichler, who named the competition in honor of his mother, a math teacher, was also on hand to encourage the students and served as a speaker.  Deichler can be seen in the photos below presenting awards to our students.

Scholarship Information – Lion Federal Credit Union Scholarship

Scholarship Title: Lion Federal Credit Union

Directions:  See Mrs. Corley for application;  Deadline  is April 4.

Qualifications for eligibility:

  • Paernt/guardian must be a member of the Lion Federal Credit Union.
  • Applicant must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.
  • Special consideration will be given to community service, honors, and personal achievements.

Merger Proposal

The Norphlet School District has a community meeting scheduled for next week.  At the meeting they will go over the information included in the link and other information pertinent to a possible merger between the Smackover School District and the Norphlet School District.

In order for a merger to occur, the following actions must be taken:

  1. Each school board would have to pass a resolution supporting the merging of the districts.
  2. The school boards would submit a petition to the Arkansas Department of Education.
  3. The State Board of Education would have to approve the petition.

At this time, none of the actions listed above have occurred.

Scholarship Title: Dennis James Memorial Scholarship

Directions:  See Mrs. Corley for application;  Deadline  is March 21.

Qualifications for eligibility:

  • South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) presents this scholarship to a student exhibiting a love for the performing arts of music or theatre
  • Active participant at SAAC

SES Picture Day

Students at Smackover Elementary School will be taking spring pictures on Wednesday, February 26.

Individual and class pictures will be taken.

Order forms have already gone home.  Pictures must be paid for in advance.

SHS Students to Compete in NHS Scholarship Program

Mallory Pyron and Troy Dino, both seniors at Smackover High School and members of the National Honor Society, have been nominated to compete in the National Honor Society Scholarship program for this school year.

Jan Henderson, principal of SHS, and Tonya Corley, NHS Advisor, today announced the nominations, which places Mallory and Troy in the national competition.  This year, the program will award more than $200,000 in college scholarships.  Special recognition and additional awards will be presented to state and regional winners.  One national recipient will receive a $13,000 award.

While at SHS, Pyron and Dino have been outstanding leaders in clubs and organizations such as Student Council (Mallory serves as president), NHS, FBLA, Anchor Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Literati, Spanish National Honor Society, FFA, Science Club, Arkansas Scholars, Drama Club (Troy serves as president), and were both delegates to Boys and Girls State.

Mallory plans to attend Louisana Tech University and Troy plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas.

FFA Students Place in Leadership Competition

The Smackover FFA Chapter competed in the Dorcheat Sub-area Leadership Events held on the campus of SAU on February 3, 2014.  Participating members were Brooke Roden, Reagan Pyron, Mallory Pyron, and Grace Nash.

The following students placed in the competition and will advance to the district competition on March 7, 2014:

  • Brooke Roden – Extemporaneous Public Speaking (1st place)
  • Mallory Pyron – Discussion Meet (1st place)
  • Grace Nash – Prepared Public Speaking (2nd place)
