Smackover Elementary School Announces Semester Honor Roll

Smackover Elementary School has an honor roll and a merit list to recognize the excellent academic work of students from the entire first semester.  This list is based on an average of the first nine week’s grades and the second nine week’s grades.

SHS Students Selected for All-Region Band

Congratulations to the following band students who made All-Region Band:

  • Thomas Preston
  • Reese Childers
  • Savannah Horne

These student will present a concert with other band students selected for the All-Region Band at Drew Central High School Auditorium in Monticello on Saturday, January 21.

Thomas Preston also qualified to try out for All-State Band on February 4 at Henderson State University.  Good luck, Thomas!

Smackover High School Recognized for Improvement

Smackover High School was recognized by the Office for Education Policy of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in the Arkansas Education Report.

Highlights of the report include:

  • SHS made the list of the Top 20 Most Improved Schools Based on EOC Algebra I Achievement from 2010-2011.
  • SHS made the list of the Top 5 Most Improved High Schools in Arkansas by Region in Algebra I.
  • SHS made the list of the Top 5 Most Improved High School in Arkansas by Region in Literacy.

January School Board Meeting

The Smackover School Board met on Monday, January 9, 2012.  Highlights from the meeting include:

  • Smackover Elementary School was awarded a 1003(a) grant from the Arkansas Department of Education worth approximately $40,000.  The money from the grant will be used to pay for a consultant (Toni Lockhart), to fund stipends to elementary teachers for aligning the new math Common Core State Standards, and to partially provide funding for professional development for teachers related to differentiated instruction.
  • The Gifted/Talented Program was reviewed in the fall.  Mr. Smeltzer read the commendation letter from the Arkansas Department of Education to the school board praising Mrs. Kristan Zargari for her work with the gifted program including her plan for supporting high school teachers working with gifted students.
  • The Board accepted the resignation of two employees.
  • The Board extended the contract of Superintendent Mr. Smeltzer for the 2012-2013 school year.

School Board meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at 6 pm.  The public is invited to attend.

Report Cards and Awards Assembly

Elementary and high school report cards for the second nine weeks will be sent home Tuesday, January 10.  If you do not receive your child’s report card, please contact Mrs. Bird at the elementary school or Mrs. Nutter at the high school.

Smackover Elementary School will have an awards assembly on Friday, January 13 at 9 am in the auditorium.  Parents and community members are invited to attend.  We hope to see you there!

“Miss Smuckover” Pageant

The Junior Class of Smackover High School sponsored the “Miss Smuckover” pageant in December as a fundraiser for prom.  The Junior Class raised $591.70 from admission and the People’s Choice award.

Smackover Preschool Welcomes Three Employees

Smackover Preschool welcomed three new employees on Thursday.

Ms. Tena Henry will be working with the children in the Toddler room.  Ms. Tena graduated from Smackover High School and is currently working on her Child Development Associate credential.

Ms. Stephanie Jones will be a preschool paraprofessional.  Ms. Stephanie graduated from South Arkansas Community College with an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree.

Ms. Malinda Butler will also be a preschool paraprofessional.  Ms. Malinda graduated from SAU Magnolia with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree.
